The state museum commission Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) last week approved placement of a roadside marker at Main & Broad Sts, Quakertown, in honor of the 1798 Fries Rebellion. Location, marker text and dedication date are to be worked out.
John Fries was born in Hatfield township, Montgomery county about 1750, married Mary Brunner of White Marsh, at the age of 20 and 5 years later removed to Milford, Bucks Co., where he built a house on the land of Joseph Galloway at Boggy Creek. At the time of the outbreak he lived in a log house on a lot the belonged to William Edwards on the Sumneytown road. He had served in the Rev.. "He was a man of good mind", says Gen. W. H.H. Davis in his "History of Bucks County", but he had received only the rudiments of an education. He talked well, and possesed a rude eloquence that alway swayed the multitude. His character was good, and he stood well among his neighbors. He learned a cooper's trade, but followed the occupation of a vendue crier. He died about 1820.
