HILLTOWN

Hilltown was organized in 1722.

 Immigrants coming into this part of the county came through Philadelphia, now Montgomery county, and were generally Welsh Baptists and German Lutherans and Reformed. Hilltown was the first township formed north of Buckingham. Among the first settlers was Israel Pemberton, an original land-owner in Hilltown, James Logan and Reverend William Thomas. Mr. Thomas was one of the fathers of Hilltown, and one of the most reputable men who settled it. Richard Thomas (not related to William) was an early settler whose sons turned out badly. Two of them entered the British army, William and Evan. Evan was with the British at the Battle of Crooked Billet where he was charged with assisting to burn our wounded in buckwheat straw.

In Hilltown are four churches, two Baptist, one Union, Lutheran and Reformed and one Mennonite. Hilltown was the birthplace of two members of the House of Representatives of the United States, John Pugh and Matthias Morris. 2

The Pearl S. Buck House, 520 Dublin Road in Hilltown will be decorated inside and out with an international Christmas theme through Dec. 30 for the 22nd Annual Holiday Festival. The house and grounds will be open for tours at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. There are additional tours at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Fridays. Tours will be given at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is $7 for adults and $6 for students and seniors. Call (800) 220-BUCK or go to www.pearlsbuck.org.
